Preserving the most renowned cycle tourism route in Bosnia and Herzegovina remains a priority
The HerzegovinaBike association today carried out another field action to clean and maintain a section of the Ćiro cycling route, covering the stretch from Mostar to Čapljina. The activity was conducted as part of the “Ćiro Route Management Plan,” which the association signs with all cities and municipalities through which this important trail passes. Ten members of the association took part in the action, while firefighters from Čapljina simultaneously worked on the section heading toward Ravno, once again confirming the importance of coordinated efforts among local partners.

During the inspection of the route, members of HerzegovinaBike cleaned the waymarkers, removed waste, and restored the visibility of cycling signs. Although often unnoticed, such activities are essential for safety and for ensuring a high-quality experience along the route—especially considering that the Ćiro Trail attracts thousands of cycle tourists from around the world each year, many of whom choose this trail and Bosnia and Herzegovina as their destination for active travel.

The motivation behind today’s action was also a recent act of vandalism. This summer, several Ćiro signposts along the Mostar–Čapljina section were defaced with graffiti, damaging the appearance of the route and creating difficulties for visitors. Members of the association responded quickly—going out into the field, cleaning the damaged signs, and restoring the trail’s orderliness and clarity. During the action they met several foreign cycle tourists who welcomed their efforts, expressed gratitude, and even asked to take photos with the team.

Ćiro – the backbone of cycle tourism development in Herzegovina
The Ćiro route, connecting Mostar with Čapljina, Ravno, and Dubrovnik, has become one of the most significant cycle tourism products in the region. Its historical relevance and tourism value bring numerous benefits to the local community—from increased overnight stays and service development, to greater visibility and new business opportunities in rural areas.

This is why HerzegovinaBike emphasizes the importance of regular maintenance, responsible management, and continuous awareness-raising regarding the economic and tourism value of this route. For 11 years, HerzegovinaBike has been actively developing, promoting, and maintaining the Ćiro Trail, often in cooperation with local cycling clubs, tourism organizations, and municipal services.
Next major action – Spring 2026

This is not the first, nor will it be the last cleanup action on the Ćiro route. In spring 2026, in cooperation with the Čapljina Cycling Club, a major field action is planned to remove overgrown vegetation on the Čapljina – Ravno section, particularly between the two bridges past the Ćiro Tersana Bridge, where plant growth has recently intensified.
With this initiative, HerzegovinaBike once again demonstrates its long-term commitment and clearly shows that maintaining the Ćiro Trail is not merely a technical task, but an investment in the future of cycle tourism, tourism in general, and the sustainable development of the entire region.
