Cycling through history, nature, and togetherness
Ljubuški je u nedjelju bio domaćin četvrte biciklijade u sklopu projekta “Rutom stećaka”, još jednom potvrđujući da biciklizam nije samo sport, već i most između rekreacije, kulturne baštine i održivog turizma. Događaj je organizirao Biciklistički klub Ljubuški u suradnji s udrugom HerzegovinaBike, a na startu se okupilo oko 200 sudionika svih uzrasta, među kojima su bili biciklisti iz brojnih hercegovačkih i dalmatinskih klubova: BK Relax, BK Grude, BK Metković, HBK Drinovci, BK Čapljina, BK Mostar, BK Posušje, BK Široki, BK Čitluk i BK Imotski.
Thirty kilometers of history and beauty
The cycling route stretched for about 30 kilometers, carefully designed to combine the town’s streets, natural beauty, and the rich historical heritage of the Ljubuški area. Cyclists visited several important sites:
- The necropolis at Bijača – one of the most renowned archaeological sites in Herzegovina, once home to an early Christian basilica. The stećci here testify to the continuity of life from antiquity through the Middle Ages.
- Humac – where the famous Humac tablet is kept, the oldest preserved epigraphic monument written in Bosnian Cyrillic and Old Croatian language. Cyclists visited the necropolis site, a reminder of the thousand-year cultural layers of this region.
- Studenci – a place rich in tradition and faith, where the stećci stand as silent witnesses of times past.
- Rimski logor Gračine – arheološki dragulj gdje se prepliću rimski i ranokršćanski ostaci, jedno od najznačajnijih nalazišta na ovim prostorima.
- Kravica Waterfall – an unmissable natural attraction, where cyclists enjoyed the magnificent view and a break in the shade of centuries-old trees.
The Voice of the Hosts
The organizers from BK Ljubuški expressed their satisfaction with the large turnout and the spirit of togetherness:
“We are proud that so many cyclists gathered today in Ljubuški, not only from our town but from across the region. Our goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle, love for nature and heritage, and to connect people and towns through cycling. We thank everyone who contributed to this story with their participation.”
Refreshments and fellowship
After completing the route, participants were welcomed at Ljubuški’s town square with refreshments and a meal provided by the hosts. With laughter, the sharing of impressions, and group photos, another stage of the “Rutom stećaka” project came to a close – a project that uniquely combines sport, history, and tourism.
A project with vision
The “Rutom stećaka” project is implemented within the international program SUSTOUR – Sustainable Tourism for Local Development, funded through the Interreg VI-A IPA Programa Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2021 – 2027, with the support Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of the West Herzegovina Canton.
Through this project, the stećci are not just stones – they become stories, lessons, and inspiration for all generations.
Next stop – Blidinje
The “Rutom stećaka” cycling tour will conclude its journey in Blidinje, as part Blidinje Gastro Festival where the final ride will take place as part Sunday, September 14, 2025..
