Tomislavgrad is located in the northern Herzegovina region in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The name of the city literally means "town of Tomislav". The name was changed from Duvno in 1925 by King Aleksandar Karađorđević in honor of King Tomislav - who was crowned King of Croatia in this region in 925. Duvno's name was restored after the Second World War in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. During the 1990s, it was again changed to Tomislavgrad. However, among the inhabitants of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the inhabitants here are often called "Duvnjaci", and the city is often called Duvno. Also, the city is sometimes called simply "Tomislav". The Roman Catholic diocese in that area is still called Mostar-Duvanjska today. During the Roman Empire, the city was called Delminium, and during the Kingdom of Croatia, Županjac. Under the Ottoman Empire it was called Županj-potok, and in Austria-Hungary it was called Županjac.

History of Duvno

Tomislavgrad, i.e. the entire Tuvanj area, is an area with an extremely rich, but also turbulent history. According to archaeological research, man appeared in the Duvanjsko polje area in prehistory, during the Neolithic (around 6500-3500 BC), while archaeological remains irrefutably confirm that the Duvanjski region was inhabited in the Eneolithic (around 3500-2200 BC). g. BC).

The citizens of Tomislavgrad are proud of their rich history, and especially of the coronation of King Tomislav in 925 in Duvanjsko polje, which is why Tomislavgrad is often called the royal city.

Stelae (Stećci)

The necropolises in Duvanjsko polje stand out for their loveliness. You can find them in the villages: "Sarajlije", "Zidine", "Letka", "Lipa" and "Mandino Selo".

Duvno Basilica, monastery and museum

The Basilica of Duvna is considered one of the main attractions of the city. Visitors can sit in the quiet courtyard in front of the basilica and simply enjoy. The interior is decorated with the painting "Jesus friend of the little one" painted by the world-famous artist Vlaho Bukovac.

In the same courtyard, visitors will find the Franciscan Museum, the Franciscan Library, the Museum Gallery and the Ancient Elephant Exhibition.

The underground world of Duvanjsko polje - speleology

More than 200 speleological objects: pits, caves, sinkholes are located in the mountain massifs around Duvanjsko polje and Lake Buška.
