History of Trebinje

Trebinje is first mentioned in the records of Constantine VI Porphyrogenet in the 10th century as Travunija. During that time, Trebinje was on the caravan route that led from Kotor and Dubrovnik to Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro. The oldest material evidence with the inscription "Trebinje" is carved on the tombstone of the county of Grd from the second half of the 12th century, which was found in the part of town called Police.

The first urban outlines of Trebinje were formed in the Middle Ages. Originally, Trebinje was part of the then Byzantine archonty (province), and then until the 14th century it was the center of Travunija, a state that was part of the kingdom of Nemanjić. The area of Trebinje developed under the strong influence of the Byzantine Empire in the Middle Ages, and in the 15th century, after many years of independence, it fell under centuries-old Ottoman rule. After that, it was part of Austria-Hungary until 1918. For almost 200 years in the Middle Ages, Trebinje was ruled by the Nemanjić dynasty, and after that by Tvrtko Kotromanić. From 1337 to 1466 (fall under Turkish rule), Trebinje was part of the Bosnian banovina (area) ruled by the Kosača family. Turkish rule lasted from 1446 to 1878.

Each of these eras and rules left its mark and branded the local culture, both spiritually and materially.

Geographical location

The area of Trebinje is located in the extreme southern part of Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is also the hinterland of the southern Adriatic coast - the hinterland of the Herzegnov and Dubrovnik coasts.

Trebinje has an area of 904 m2 and is classified as an average-sized municipality in the Republic of Srpska.

In the north, the municipality borders with Bileća, in the northwest with Ljubinje, in the south and southwest with the municipality of Ravno (Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina), in the south and southeast with the municipality of Dubrovnik (Croatia) and in the east with the municipality of Nikšić (Montenegro).

Climate

The Mediterranean (semi-continental) climate with 260 sunny days is the reason for the warm and pleasant appearance of this region and the people who live there. The favorable climate provides good conditions for agriculture, especially for the cultivation of vines, early fruits and vegetables, which enriches Herzegovina's gastronomic offer for tourists.

With a large number of sunny days, the climate of Trebinje has mild humidity and cloudiness, increased air flow, rains in winter and hot summers. It is interesting that autumns are warmer than spring. The average annual temperature is around 15.5 °C.
